How to plant a cherry tree for your orchard, garden, or backyard. I cover both planting a cherry tree in the ground as well as a raised bed in heavy clay soil.
Remember to never plant at or above the graft union. Plant the graft high above the soil line.
Watering: Usually, I water a tree in with 5 gallons. The first half goes in when the tree is planted half-way. The second half of the water is added after the tree is fully planted. I used just over a gallon in this video; however, my heavy clay mixed with sand soil was moist and the forecast called for a heavy downpour that night.
Added Sand to Heavy Clay: All my trees planted in raised beds are mixed with large grain sand -- from 20% to 40%, depending on the type of tree and the root stock. Sometimes I add some high quality, moist worm castings too.
Trees planted in Western caliche or "Southern" caliche are planted differently. Stay tuned for that video.
