Cyber-attacks and information influence operations are posing gravest threat to election infrastructure and perceptions of electoral integrity. In the recent years, China has upped its influence operations in big way to manipulate narratives and exploit political fault lines in democracies across the world. Much like Russia’s Doppelganger, China has created lethal Spamoufrage to manipulate information and narrative in the election processes in South Korea, Taiwan, India, Japan and in the recently held US Presidential elections. The arrival of AI tools particularly Generative AI has dramatically transformed the scales of information manipulation by China. The talk will explore the extent of Chinese influence operation and what methods it uses to manipulate opinions/narratives? How do Chinese state and non-state actors try to influence targeted countries? This talk will largely articulate China's operations using the example of the 2024 elections in Japan and the United States.
