Deng Xiaoping visited Singapore in November 1978 and met up with Lee Kuan Yew. From the visit, Deng Xiaoping saw in Singapore a model which can be used to transform China. During the trip, Singapore’s founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew said to Deng: “Whatever we have done, you can do better because we are the descendants of the landless peasants of south China. You have the scholars, you have the scientists, you have the specialists. Whatever we do, you will do better.”
A few years later, during his famous 1992 tour of southern parts of China, Deng said China must learn from Singapore and do better. A lot of the “learning from Singapore” campaigns started with the Special Economic Zones in the southern regions. So, what are Lee Kuan Yew’s views of the great man, Deng Xiaoping?
