Ukrainian troops defended the ruins of Andriivka from Russian attack. Soldiers of the 3rd Assault Brigade recently captured the town. And they have revealed what life is like trying to hold on to it.
Russian shells explode constantly between the shattered houses. But the Ukrainians are used to it, cursing each time one lands nearby. They take up positions inside the ruined buildings to give some cover. And then open fire on the Russian attackers with their machine guns. Russia is desperate to re-take the settlement, located south of Bakhmut. Because they fear it will be used to surround and recapture the city. But so-far all their attacks have been replaced, with heavy losses. Ukraine is using Bakhmut as a fixing operation to support the counter-attack. Their job is to keep some of Russia’s best troops trapped in the area. Which stops them heading south to aid in the defence of Crimea.
