A new television drama will draw upon the experiences of those affected by the summer bushfires that unleashed devastation across the country earlier this year. The Fires, set to air on ABC, is a serialised anthology inspired by the extraordinary stories of the people who survived last summers catastrophic fire season and continue to endure their aftermath today. The production will be lead by Perth-raised Tony Ayres, who co-founded the production company Matchbox Pictures in 2008 and more recently established Tony Ayres Productions. Matchbox was behind the TV adaptation of Christos Tsiolkas book The Slap, as well as Alis Wedding and The Family Law. As well as leading production on The Fires, Ayres most recently worked on the ABC drama Stateless, and is also currently working on the multi-million dollar Netflix series Clickbait. In The Fires, each episode is based around character studies of ordinary people caught in the unimaginable and the impossible choices they were forced to make. Characters include volunteer firefighters; families who lost homes, livelihoods and loved ones; people who had to make agonising decisions about whether to stay or flee; and others who found themselves responsible for the lives of friends and strangers. The Fires puts viewers at the centre of an experience which most people watched from a distance. Like the rest of the world, I watched in horror last summer as I saw the devastation caused by the mega-fires, Ayres said. I wondered, What can we do as artists? For me, the answer was to tell the stories of some of the people who lived through this, so that we never forget what they went through, and always remember our responsibility for change,.
