Another way to learn about where these birds go is by using geolocators. In 2017, Audubon South Carolina outfitted several male painted buntings with geolocators, a kidney bean sized transmitters which measures light levels to help us determine the location of the bird each day by using sunlight to tell latitude and longitude. The geolocator has a clock, a battery, and a light recording device. It stores information, but you have to recover the device (by recatching the bird) to be able to download the data and learn from it. A tiny backpack is placed on the bird with the geotransmitter that is less than 4% of the body weight. The two transmitters that were recovered by Audubon South Carolina determined that some of our summer residents were wintering in Florida and Cuba.
