A recent study found two-thirds of employees would put in more effort and be more effective if their manager was more compassionate and listened to them more. Why are so many managers not compassionate? Because in our day to day we get busy, stressed and focused on ourselves. Compassion is like an equation, it equals empathy plus supportive action. So go out of your way to support people who need you. To show empathy, learn the names of the people that are important to them in their lives. To demonstrate supportive action to your team, use the photo frame trick; focus on the person you're talking to, as if there is literally a picture frame around their head, and try to look at them the majority of the time.
