Butchers in the conservative Indian state of Gujarat face a lifetime in jail if found guilty of killing a cow. Critics say the law is an attack on personal freedom, and for a country with a secular constitution many are worried by what they see as the creeping influence of religion.
But the calls for a nationwide ban on beef are growing louder. And in some cases, mob justice is swifter than the law. Before people are even being convicted, they're being killed. Rights groups say since the Prime Minister's Hindu nationalist party came to power vigilantes have beaten a dozen Muslims to death over allegations they 'mistreated cows'.
