🌟🙌 When we speak of the story of Joab, we are diving into the exploits of one of the greatest warriors that ever lived in the kingdom of Israel. He was a collector of brilliant battle victories, the unrivaled commander of the Israelite army during David's reign, and a key figure in the consolidation of David's rule in Jerusalem. However, Joab was much more than a skilled warrior and someone loyal to David.
He had a vengeful and bloodthirsty nature, alternating between moments of common sense and strange attitudes, which sometimes led him to betray his own loyalty. In this account, you will discover everything the Bible tells us about who Joab really was and understand why his end of life was so regrettable.
Joab was the son of Zeruiah and therefore David's nephew, since Zeruiah was the king's sister. Little is known about his father, except that he was buried in Bethlehem. The name "Joab" means "Yahweh is father".
Joab's story begins in the Bible when he is mentioned alongside his two brothers leading David's men in battle against the army of Ishbosheth, son of King Saul. Ishbosheth's forces, led by Abner, were defeated, but this event set in motion a series of events marked by Joab's relentless revenge. His brother Asael relentlessly pursued Abner, prompting Abner to kill him in self-defense. However, Joab was not content with this and treacherously murdered Abner to avenge his brother.
This abominable attitude was harshly reproved by David, who predicted divine punishments for Joab and his family. Even so, Joab continued to play a prominent role as commander of Israel's army, winning many battles and contributing to the unification of the kingdom under David's rule.
Although Joab demonstrated nobility on occasions and tried to reconcile situations, his contradictory personality led him to become involved in dark episodes. He supported David's sinful plan to kill Uriah and was involved in Absalom's death, even when David expressly commanded that his son's life be spared.
Joab's decline began when Solomon ascended the throne of Israel. Joab proved disloyal by supporting Adonijah's attempt to seize the throne, going against David's express wish that Solomon succeed him. This ultimately contributed to Joab's tragic end.
In the last days of his life, Joab was no longer loyal to the king's purposes, and when Solomon took the throne, he sought refuge in the sanctuary at Gibeon. Solomon ordered Benaiah to kill him, so that the blood unjustly shed by Joab would not fall on the house of David. Joab was buried in his own house in the desert, and Benaiah took his place in command of the army of Israel.
Thus ends the story of Joab, a brilliant warrior, but whose ambiguous character and questionable choices led him to a sad end.
