One of the most deadly diseases to ever hit Britain was the Plague which came around a number of times during the centuries. One of the most devastating and final waves of the Black Death came around in 1665 with The Great Plague, that caused the deaths of thousands across the country. However there was one village that took incredible steps during 1665 and 1666 to stop the spread of the deadly disease. Eyam in the Peak District, Derbyshire remarkably took a number of steps to stop the plague reaching Sheffield. They understood the need to quarantine, and the villagers took the decisive step to isolate the village allowing no-one in or out of Eyam. Hundreds of villagers died, but the story of the Hancock (e) family of Eyam was incredibly tragic.
One of the biggest rules instigated to protect from the plague was that dead villagers should be buried not in the churchyard, but close to where they died. The Plague caused chaos to the Hancocks who lived on Riley Lane in Eyam, and within the space of 8 days, Elizabeth Hancock was forced to drag out the bodies of her husband and 6 children into the paddock next to her house. She then had to dig 7 graves and bury her own children and husband inside of the graves, after they all passed away from the Great Plague. The Hancock Family were the whole family killed by the plague in a week, and their story was incredibly tragic. There were more examples in Eyam of families who lost a number of members too.
