Did you know Mexico had its own version of the sub-prime mortgage crisis? In the governments of Vicente Fox and Felipe Calderón, enormous housing developments were built, in a public-private partnership between the federal housing agency Infonavit and a series of private contractors. But the program turned into a slow-motion disaster: while investors and company executives reaped huge profits, the housing projects themselves are falling apart, their residents trapped in sub-standard units with constantly increasing mortgage payments.
