The Open Systems Interconnection model, or OSI model, is a reference model for how applications should communicate over a network -- the key world being “should.” The OSI model breaks down the communication process between two network endpoints into seven layers, acting as a network protocol.
The seven layers are the application layer, presentation layer, session layer, transport layer, network layer, data-link layer, and physical layer. Each layer has it’s own function, and transmits info to the layer above and below it to work together.
Unfortunately, the model is rarely implemented as-is, and few network products actually keep related functions together in the OSI model’s well-defined layers.
