Japan's new emperor, Naruhito, has completed his ascension to the Chrysanthemum Throne after performing a series of ancient rituals in an elaborate ceremony.
The 59-year-old vowed to "stand with the people” in front of around 2,000 guests that included heads of state and other royals from more than 180 countries.
