The Evil Within was supposed to be the return to survival horror for Tango Gameworks director Shinji Mikami, another bold step in redefining the genre he'd innovated with Resident Evil and then revolutionized with Resident Evil 4. But while the Evil Within sold 4 million copies, these expectations proved the Evil Within's undoing, and ever since it's been dragged by many players ever since as a disappointment, a frustrating, clunky mess with a confusing story and boring characters. But I think this characterization is not only hyperbolic, it's flat out inconsistent with how survival horror fans have always withstood and even appreciated even the jankiest design decisions in Silent Hill 2 or any number of other classic survival horror titles. Yet somehow the Evil Within is the one that gets criticized. Why is that? Well, find out within!
