Tourism and travel were hammered for the last two years thanks to the pandemic, and it’s not back to life as usual as COVID restrictions lift in many countries. For one thing, many countries, like Hong Kong and China, are still imposing draconian measures to battle the virus, and there’s always the lurking danger of a resurgence of a more virulent variant. While tourism is an important part of Europe’s economy, the other issue looming over the sector is climate change. For the EU to meet its goal of becoming climate neutral by 2050, emissions from transport and tourism will have to drastically fall. That’s going to mean radical changes in aviation, travel and tourism as well as in consumer behavior.
