The SME Assembly 2024, hosted in Budapest from 18-20 November, is Europe’s foremost event for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), bringing together leaders from across the continent to discuss critical issues, share best practices, and shape the future of SME policy. Organised by the European Commission and the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, it highlights the vital role SMEs play in Europe’s economic resilience and innovation.
The "SMEs in the Proximity Economy" session highlighted this often-overlooked yet vital ecosystem, identified by the European Commission as critical to Europe’s resilience and competitiveness. Encompassing cooperatives and numerous SMEs, the proximity economy promotes social cohesion, regional development, and aligns with the EU’s strategic autonomy goals.
Discussions emphasised the need for an integrated policy approach across areas like mobility, digitalisation, industry, and entrepreneurship. Participants also examined the European Innovation Council and EISMEA’s ongoing study to better define the proximity economy and develop effective EU policies to strengthen this essential sector.
