In his press statement on 18 October 2024, UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food, Michael Fakhri, underscored the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, shaped by decades of control and deliberate policies. From 2000 to 2023, Israel maintained a system that kept Palestinians in Gaza on the brink of starvation, carefully calibrating food access to avoid international alarm. By 6 October 2023, half of Gaza's population was food insecure, and 80% relied on humanitarian aid. With a starvation campaign declared later on 9 October 2023, the situation escalated, leaving the entire population hungry by December.
