Bench testing an old starter 10 years old out of a MaxxForce 7 and comparing it to a new rebuilt starter that fits a DT MaxxForce diesel engine.
You noticed the heavy spark at the solenoid main terminal on the new starter? Due to the nut on the battery connection being loose. My Bad! There is a LOT of amperage going through that circuit. The bench vice could have been tighter as well...lots of torque going on with this bad boy. The difference is obvious the old starter is dragging badly with a heavy growl.
This old starter paid for itself after 10 years so we will send it out for a rebuild. In the past our shop used to rebuild starters and alternators but the time involved was too much taking away maintenance time from the fleet.
Starter prices have come down quite a bit over the years and they also come with a warranty. Competition is a good thing for us consumers.
