(5 Mar 2018) Italy's Democratic Party conceded its stunning defeat at the country's national elections early on Monday morning.
Speaking at the national headquarters in Rome, PD's Deputy-Secretary, Maurizio Martina, said the party's poor showing was "an undeniable, very distinct, clear defeat".
Party leader, Matteo Renzi, was nowhere in sight as speculation mounts about his possible resignation.
Preliminary results show PD as lagging behind anti-establishment 5-star Movement and a coalition of centre-right parties.
Martina, who also serves as Agriculture Minister in the outgoing government, said Renzi will offer further considerations on Monday.
