The second & last part of the compilation of a journey from Kolkata to Silchar on-board the Kanchanjunga Express. Part 1 (see link above) had ended with us having reached Guwahati, the capital of Assam, at 4:38 am in the morning of Day 2. Part 2 starts from here.
To being with, our link, the cream liveried Malda WDM-3A was replaced by a surprise in twin WDG-3As from Kharagpur of all sheds. Shining bright orange in the morning light, the twin WDG-3As lead us out of Guwahati at 5:30 am, delayed by an hour, for Lumding. We have a brief passage past the outskirts of Guwahati, its coaching yard, local villages and over a meandering path through the hills. The weather was completely different from Day 1; clouds were dominating the sky with no sign of the sun.
We reach Lumding well on time where I meet Subhadeep, a young and ardent railfan. It is then that the real surprise greets me. Instead of the usual WDP-4D for the Lumding Badarpur stretch, we were allotted another twin ALCos, this time WDM-3D twins from New Guwahati. Railfanning Gods were smiling wide on me !!!
This ensured one thing; for the entire ghat section from Lumding to Badarpur, we would be at the mercy of two sets of majestic twin ALCos. The Kharagpur twins had now turned bankers. Call that luck !!!
I would fall short of words if I were to describe the beauty of the hills along the ghat section. Added to that was the lush green forests and vegetation all around owning to the onset of monsoon. Grey overcast clouds kept hovering, forming beautiful patterns in the sky, carelessly, occasionally blessing us with sharp spells of rains. The rivers, River Mahur, River Jatinga & River Barak had also been blessed with water. We breezed through the ghat section with our twins proving some melodious chugging music all along. A special mention here for the New Haflong station, which literally left me stunned with its beauty. To add a last point, the entire section also features 21 tunnels with Tunnel 9 being the longest at 3.3km.
Our steady run ensured we reach Badarpur Jn well before time by 30 minutes. We undergo another reversal at Badarpur as the New Guwahati WDM-3D twins get detached and the Kharagpur twins take over again till Silchar. Badarpur to Silchar is a short stretch which we covered in some 30 minutes more to round up a fascinating journey through the Himalayas which people in those parts lovingly call the "Assam Hill Railway".
