QUICK FACTS
Habitats:
Tapirs are found in the tropical forests and rainforests of South and Central America, as well as in Southeast Asia. They prefer dense vegetation near water sources like rivers, streams, and swamps.
Diet:
Tapirs are herbivores and their diet consists primarily of leaves, twigs, fruits, berries, and vegetation found on the forest floor. They use their flexible proboscis to grasp and pull leaves and branches towards their mouths.
Size:
Tapirs are large, heavy-set mammals. They typically stand around 3-4 feet (0.9-1.2 meters) tall at the shoulder and can weigh between 500-800 pounds (225-360 kg). The Asian tapir is slightly smaller than its American relatives.
Life Span:
In the wild, tapirs can live up to 25-30 years on average. In captivity, with proper care and nutrition, they can live up to 30-35 years.
Predators:
Due to their size and strength, adult tapirs have few natural predators. However, their main threats come from large cats like jaguars, pumas, and tigers (for Asian tapirs). Tapir calves are more vulnerable to predation from these big cats as well as crocodiles, anacondas, and other large snakes.
