The victor of Congo's four-month civil war, Denis Sassou Nguesso, was sworn in as president Saturday (25/10), promising to restore democracy to the war-torn country. Sassou Nguesso arrived in the shattered capital Thursday (23/10), more than a week after his Cobra militia defeated the opposition. Sassou Nguesso, formerly the president of Congo from 1979 until 1992, said at least 100,000 people died in the fighting, contrary to official figures of 4,000.
