May 4th, 2013. 2 undefeated World Champions collided in the 5th Super Welterweight Unification Fight in history; WBC Light Middleweight Champion Canelo Alvarez and WBA World Light Middleweight Champion Austin Trout, both ranked No. 2 and No. 3 by Ring Magazine respectively.
Interestingly, this is the 2nd 154 Pound Unification Fight involving 2 undefeated World Champions. The 1st was between WBA Super Welterweight Champion Felix Trinidad and IBF Junior Middleweight Champion Fernando Vargas back in December 2000.
Floyd Mayweather Jr was the No. 1 rated 154 pounder at this time and the winner of this bout will be slated to fight him.
Prefight records; Alvarez 41(30)-0-1, Trout 26(14)-0.
In March 2011, 20 year old Alvarez outclassed “Magic” Matthew Hatton over 12 rounds to bag the vacant WBC World Super Welterweight Title. Between June 2011 and September 2012, he made 5 successful defenses.
His 6th title defense was scheduled to be against Austin “No Doubt” Trout.
In February 2011, Trout dominated Canelo’s younger brother Rigoberto Alvarez to win a lopsided UD12 and garnered the vacant WBA World Super Welterweight Title. He made 4 successful title defenses between June 2011 and December 2012.
Entering the bout, the 1.8-1 betting underdog Trout had commendable triumphs over the likes of Rigoberto Alvarez, Delvin Rodriguez & Miguel Cotto.
On the other hand, Alvarez had notable wins over Carlos Baldomir, Josesito Lopez, Kermit Cintron, Shane Mosley, Matthew Hatton & Lovemore Ndou.
In the early goings, Trout circled around Canelo and dictated the real estate with his footwork and utilized an effective jab to keep Canelo at bay while making him missed a number of times but the 22 year old Mexican World Champion still managed to land with some good shots
As the fight progressed into the mid point, Canelo started to title the field to his favor as he connected with cleaner blows at a higher rate although he took some in return as well.
10 seconds into the 7th, Canelo zapped Trout with thunderous straight right that resulted in a delayed reaction knockdown. It was the first time Trout had tasted the canvas in 27 pro bouts.
Trout beat the count and came back strong throughout the rest of the round which might have been enough to offset the extra point gained by Alvarez for the knockdown. Up to this point, Canelo was arguably slightly ahead in the cards.
The last 5 rounds were highly competitive with great back and forth action by both fighters where Canelo landed the harder, more telling single shots while Trout was the busier fighter who landed at a higher rate; making most of these rounds close and could possibly go either way.
After 36 minutes of pure excitement, Alvarez became the new Unified Super Welterweight Champion and retained his unbeaten record with scores of 115-112, 116-111 & 118-109.
Although Stanley Christodoulou’s 118-109 card raised some controversies, but it did not affect the outcome of the bout as most observers thought Canelo won by approximately 2 points in one of the best fights of 2013.
Round 7 of Canelo-Trout was also one of the best rounds of that year.
On May 4th 2019, Canelo Alvarez (now a Triple Crown World Champion) will take on “The Miracle Man” Daniel Jacobs in a Middleweight Unification Fight where the IBF, WBA & WBC World Middleweight Titles will be on the line.
This is a potential Fight of the Year candidate and definitely one of the most anticipated showdowns of 2019!
