Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was on Tuesday (17/10) sworn in for
another seven-year term in office after winning 99.96 percent of
the vote in an unprecedented referendum. The ceremony
opened with the national anthem and a 101-gun salute outside a
"joint meeting of the Revolutionary Command Council (RCC) and the
national assembly" or parliament. The deputy leader of the ruling
RCC Izzat Ibrahim who supervised Sunday's poll officially declared
Saddam the winner and invited him to take the oath of office. With
his hand on the Koran, Saddam pledged before "almighty God, by my
honour and my faith to respect the independence, integrity and
unity of Iraq." Ibrahim then called on the president to receive "the sword and the pen" as a gift from the nation.
