On now at the Phoenix Art Museum, "Emphatics: Avant Garde Fashion 1963-2013" features the intact archive of visionary US retailers James and Karin Legato, including designs, accessories, and ephemera from Alexander McQueen, Issey Miyake, Thierry Mugler, John Galliano, Romeo Gigli, Christian Lacroix, Alaïa, Claude Montana, and John Paul Gaultier, among others, and will be on display through 16 January 2017. Founded in 1963 as an upscale hair salon in Pittsburgh, by James Legato, Emphatics eventually expanded into womenswear. Together with business partner and wife, Karin, the Legatos built Emphatics into a premier retailer for European fashion and was the first point of sale for Jean Paul Gaultier and Maud Frizon.
The Phoenix Art Museum has on display approximately 100 ensembles and a range of ephemera and multimedia displays including personal photographs and video taken in showrooms and at fashion shows by the Legatos as well as designers' original videos and invitations from three decades of attending fashion weeks worldwide.
