In the second and third quarters, the Denver Gold had five straight drives that reached the Houston 4, 2, 9, 13 and 25-yard lines. From those five scoring opportunities, the Gold extracted zero points.
Jim Asmus missed a pair of chip-shot field goals, and Gold quarterback Bob Gagliano was intercepted three times in the end zone.
Asmus, atoning for two earlier missed field-goal attempts, kicked an 18-yarder with one second remaining, lifting the Gold to a 16-13 United States Football League victory over the Houston Gamblers.
The victory enabled the Gold to clinch a playoff berth.
