Italian physicist Enrico Fermi (1901-1954) is one of the towering scientific personalities of the twentieth century. A brilliant, colorful and deeply conflicted man, he departed Mussolini’s Italy for the United States, just in time to play a leading role in the discovery of atomic fission and the Manhattan Project that brought an end to World War II.
