Cancer cells try to invade surrounding tissue. Scientists know that breast cancers and related tumors use chemical means to carve out escape routes. But new research from Stanford reveals that breast cancers can use physical extensions to tunnel through the body. In this time lapse video a breast cancer cell is shown pushing its way through a biogel that is impervious to its chemical tricks. Sped up about 3,000 times, the cell repeatedly extends invasive tendrils over an 11-hour period to migrate through the tissue-like biogel. Video courtesy of Katrina Wisdom.
