I wrote the three licks in the video with the E phrygian scale in mind. If you’re into jamming over backing tracks, pull up an E phrygian backing track on YouTube and try improvising with these licks and the notes they’re using. Parts of the licks will also work over A minor, C major, etc and will have a surprisingly different sound.
In terms of technique, it’s mostly just legato with a bit of picking. The one thing I think could be a struggle for someone learning guitar is the finger independence needed to be hammering-on/pulling-off between 2nd & 4th and 3rd & 4th fingers. I remember when I was learning, I found it easy to hammer-on/pull-off between 1st finger and the others, but much harder to do it between 2nd & 4th or 3rd & 4th. As with most things on guitar, the way to improve finger independence is to practice it. A book I used back in the day was Speed Mechanics For Lead Guitar, which had lots of useful exercises and there are probably tons of finger independence exercises out there these days. Generally though I’m not a great fan of exercises because they often don’t sound very musical; it’s more fun to learn something that actually sounds good while also improving whatever techniques that particular piece is using.
Variation 2 is the easiest to play as it’s basically the first half of the other two plus a few notes on the end, so I didn’t include a slow play through for that one.
The guitar in the video is an Ibanez RG652AHMFX-RPB, in standard tuning. Audio was recorded using a Positive Grid Spark as an audio interface.
