STORYLINE:
The Israeli Defence Minister Amir Perez visited an army base in northern Israel on Tuesday, and told the soldiers there that "we intend to win." as the country's ferocious bombardment of Lebanon entered its seventh day.
Peretz met soldiers and was given a tour of the army base as well as offering his encouragement.
"We intend to continue the operation and to reach the goal we defined for ourselves. They will be achieved. It is one of the military operations that undoubtedly will define the future of the state of Israel, it's civilians capabilities, we intend to win," said Peretz.
Peretz, formerly a populist union leader, was considered by many not to have the military experience necessary to oversee the army.
Also on Tuesday, an Israeli government spokesperson, Miri Eisen, spoke of Israel's objections to UN troops being stationed on the border with Lebanon.
Eisen said: "any type of international force on Lebanese southern border would not solve the problem of rockets that are being fired now from Beirut".
Speaking in the northern city of Haifa, she added "Israel has had not always pleasant experiences with United Nations forces in the area, and we're aware of those limitations."
Air raid sirens sounded across Haifa, Israel's second largest city after Tel Aviv, on Tuesday.
A barrage of rockets have hit Haifa on in the last few days, killing at least nine people and emptying the city's beaches, streets, cafes and shops.
Hezbollah has fired hundreds of rockets at northern Israeli towns from the Lebanese border - while Israel has engaged in a mainly aerial campaign.
In the past, Haifa has been out of range of rockets used by Hezbollah, but Israel has been saying for years that the Lebanese guerrilla group has received longer-range
rockets from Iran and Syria.
Haifa is 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the Lebanese border.
