Watch this cinematic video of Doodhpathri, the Valley of Milk in Kashmir. Doodhpathri is located in Budgam district, about 45 km from Srinagar, and takes about 2 hours to reach. There are some places that simply turn you speechless. The sheer beauty of these places often makes you wonder – can this really be so beautiful! Doodhpathri definitely falls in this category. How Doodhpathri got its name? There was once a famous Sufi saint Sheikh Noor din Noorani who had come to the valleys for praying in peace. He was looking for water in the meadows to wash his hands and feet. He used his stick to prick the ground in search of water. Surprising him, Instead of water, milk comes gushing out. But the saint thought - milk should be used for drinking, not washing! And so by divine provenance, the milk changed back to the water. And the meadow got its name Doodhpathri. There is another theory as well - The fast-flowing water of the river when strikes against the stones, gives a milky appearance. This could also be the reason why this place is known as Doodhpathri. Doodhpathri is a bowl-shaped valley, lying at the foothills of the Pir Panjal ranges. 2 rivers, Shaliganga and Sokhnag flow on either side of the pastures. There are a few viewpoints in Doodhpathri that you can view by taking a pony ride. The ponies have a fixed rate.
How to reach? You have to rent a car from Srinagar to visit Doodhpathri. The car will take Rs. 2000 - 2500.00 for a day trip. There are no places to stay in Doodhpathri. There is a hotel and a few restaurants about 6 km from Doodhpathri. Usually, Doodhpathri is done as a day trip from Srinagar.
It is an alpine valley covered with snow clad mountains and the meadows of Pine Fir and Deodar. The natural meadows, which are covered with snow in winter, allow the growth of wild flowers such as daisies, forget-me-nots and butter cups during spring and summer. Demographics:- Doodhpathri has no permanent settlement and is inaccessible during winter due to heavy snowfall. In summer shepherds from the plains of district budgam bring cattle for grazing and remain at doodhpathri seasonally for about six months.
