The State Department of Transportation, Highways Division, Oahu District (HDOT Highways) installed traps that will capture the debris that comes off highways from sources such as unsecured loads that are being transported, trash thrown away by pedestrians, and items blown in from nearby areas as part of a multi-year study. The study, which focuses on state routes on the island of Oahu, will help HDOT Highways determine how to reduce the proliferation of trash on highways in the future, thereby lessening the amount that finds its way into the storm drain system.
