TEXT FROM THE GOSPEL AND HOMILY
The Lord be with you. And with your spirit
A proclamation of the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. Glory to you o Lord
The Pharisees went off and plotted how they might entrap Jesus in speech. They sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. And you are not concerned with anyone's opinion, for you do not regard a person's status. Tell us, then, what is your opinion: is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?" Knowing their malice, Jesus said, "Why are you testing me you hypocrites? Show me the coin that pays the census tax." Then they handed him the Roman coin. He said to them, "Whose image is this and whose inscription?" They replied, "Caesar's." At that he said to them, "Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God."
The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
Someone very recently told me in a very frantic way, I might add, that this country that we live in, is going to be having new money and they said that this money that is coming out in this great land of ours will no longer read "In God we trust." I was a little surprised because I hadn't heard anything about it on the radio and there was nothing on the news on the television, especially with everything else that's going on in our country with the pandemic and with it's being an election year, I wondered how could they make such a change without letting the public know it all turned out to be untrue, but it made me think. In today's gospel Jesus is confronted with a trick question concerning the money of his day. He tells them that the things that deal with God have no concern with the things that deal with the so called authority. We can put anything in that place. Some people want to talk about the separation of church and state. So many things have been politicized now that we have a hard time seeing what it really means to be a follower of Christ or not. When we were asked to shelter in place, people complained because it was infringing on their personal rights. But was it because it was infringing on their rights or was it because that it was something that was being imposed upon them you know what? It's not always about us. And our rights being infringed upon not as much as it is truly putting trust in something or someone greater than ourselves. Do we really trust in God? Or was that just a nice saying that we put on our money? If we do trust in God then we have to pay to God what is God's and i'm not just using this as an excuse to ask for money, but we must truly think of what it is that we give to God it's about trust. How is our prayer? How is our giving of time to one another even by phone during this difficult time? How is our worship? We might not be able to attend church physically yet but do we spend time with God in our private prayer? These are the real questions that only you can answer for yourself. Give to God what is God's. Amen
