"Sea dragon" fossil unearthed in the Midlands has been hailed as one of the finest discoveries in British paleontology's recent history.
ichthyosaur is the biggest and most complete fossil of its type ever discovered in the United Kingdom. Its skeleton is approximately 10 meters in length and weighs around a tonne. When the Rutland Water reservoir's lagoon island was routinely drained in February 2021, it was found by Joe Davis, of the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust.
Fossil hunter and palaeontologist Mary Anning found the first ichthyosaurs, sometimes known as sea dragons because of their huge teeth and eyes, in the early 1800s.
There are numerous ichthyosaur fossils in Britain, but the Rutland ichthyosaur skeleton is exceptional because it's the biggest ever discovered in the UK," says palaeontologist Dean Lomax. One of the most significant discoveries in British palaeontology history has been made here.
After approximately 250 million years ago, marine reptile Ichthyosaurs began to emerge in the fossil record. In length, they ranged from one to more than 25 meters and resembled dolphins.
