After an unplanned stop in Japan, multiple delays, scrubbed flights and last-minute repairs, a solar-powered airplane will embark on its historic Pacific crossing from Nagoya, Japan to Hawaii, starting Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. EDT.
For the roughly 120-hour nonstop flight, the Solar Impulse 2 aircraft — which is shaped like a giant dragonfly and relies 100% on solar power to charge lithium ion batteries and turn its propellors — pilot André Borschberg will be operating from a tiny, unpressurized cabin.
