There are 3 methods to updating the firmware:
1) Console
2) OS
3) USB direct boot to flash drive
There is a fourth method by remoting into the iDRAC controller and uploading the latest firmware, but that is only for the iDRAC itself. I show that how-to video here: [ Ссылка ]
Using the Console method and grabbing updates from the Dell ftp site is the quickest and easiest especially if you only have a few servers and update infrequently. If you have 20+ like servers to update, then you might be better off using the Dell Repository Manager app running on a PC to create a bootable USB flash drive. If you can't afford downing your server except for a quick reboot, then you must use the OS method and browse to Dell's website for your service tag and grab all appropriate firmware install packages which can be installed while the server is in service and activated upon a reboot. Reminder, I'm talking about firmware updating here, not driver updating for an OS.
What I'm focused on in this video is using the Console method and grabbing the files from the Dell ftp site. Alternatively, I could have used the Console and handed a USB stick with a repository of the files needed or a network share with a repository, but that would have made this video much longer and more complex. You might spend two hours creating your flash drive, and two weeks later it's out of date, and you must spend another hour or two getting it updated again. Not worth the trouble for under 20 servers. This is why I prefer the Console ftp method. You might be forced to use a flash drive if your server is restricted from internet access.
