On the evening of May 12, 2007 San Juan County Sheriff's Deputies, New Mexico State Police, and the Bloomfield Police Department were involved in a high speed pursuit that ended in gun fire. The pursuit began when Bloomfield Police Officers were dispatched to a fight in the City of Bloomfield. When they arrived suspects fled in a vehicle and fired at the officers. A pursuit followed. The pursuit went into San Juan County and then onto the Navajo Reservation where deputies successfully executed a pit maneuver stopping the suspect vehicle. Immediately upon stopping the driver of the vehicle began shooting at Sgt. Kory Faulk. Deputies returned fire and the suspect was hit numerous times. Sgt. Faulk was shot in the face.
Both Sgt. Faulk and the suspect have since been released from the hospital. The suspect is in jail and Sgt. Faulk has returned to full duty.
Numerous media requests have been made for a copy of the in-car camera video. The Federal Bureau of Investigations is conducting an investigation into the portion of the incident that occurred on the Navajo Reservation. At the request of the United States Attorney's Office the shooting and all other events that happened on the reservation are not being released until a later date.
Attached you will find video from the initial Sherfiff's pursuit vehicle. While watching the video you will see one of the people in the suspects vehicle jump out of the car at a fast speed. In addition, you will see people in the vehicle shooting at the pursuing deputy. The video stops when the pursuit enters the Navajo Reservation. We will release the entire video as soon as the United States Attorney's Office informs us that doing so will not intrfer with their efforts to adjudicate the case.
