In December 1981, amid a raging storm and in the dark, the Penlee lifeboat - the 'Solomon Browne', desperately tried to take the crew and passengers off the stricken MV 'Union Star'. Tragically both boats foundered. 8 heroic Lifeboatmen and 8 crew aboard the Union Star were lost.
There were no survivors.
