President Petro Poroshenko has visited the Ukrainian city of Mariupol to examine the construction of fortifications near the front line. The government-controlled Black Sea port has been considered a key target of militant forces for months - in order for a land bridge to be established between Russia and the occupied Crimean peninsula, annexed by Moscow in March 2014.
The city is also economically attractive. Poroshenko said the Ukrainian army had transformed into a real fighting force, able to repel any advance by militants supported by regular Russian soldiers.
