Elko NWS meteorologist captured a time lapse of a microburst, caused by a small thunderstorm over Elko. This is looking roughly south from the National Weather Service office.
Amanda Locklear a microburst occurs when a thunderstorm collapses and the winds rush out and down. When they strike the ground, they spread out in a fan shaped pattern, typically. They can cause damage over a small area. Around here they are often visible by the dust they kick up. Even showers can cause weak ones. Look for virga, too, which is rain that does not reach the ground. The wind will still drop out of it. Pilots have to be very careful around thunderstorms, showers, and virga.
