There are three main melon types, cantaloupes (or muskmelons), Indorus types and watermelons. The smooth skinned 'honeydew' melons you see in the shops are Indorus types while cantaloupes are smaller with rough, often ribbed skins.
For growing in Ireland and the UK, I feel you are better off growing cantaloupes as their smaller size means they have a better chance of ripening in a poor summer. A homegrown, ripe cantaloupe also tastes 400 times better than any honeydew you'll buy so a really special treat if all goes well.
Unless you have a very warm and sheltered southerly garden, growing melons outside is a risky and, often, disappointing endeavour.
If you have a northerly garden like mine, I would go as small as you can and grow a compact cantaloupe like 'Petit Gris de Rennes' or 'Minnesota Midget' in your greenhouse or polytunnel.
