Perfect Praise (Moore), a gospel setting of Psalm 8 and Philippians 2:10-11, has long been a favorite among members of the Folk Choir and is immediately beloved by all those who hear the choir sing it – from the men of Michigan City Prison during the choir’s annual Mother’s Day concert, to worshippers at the choir’s weekly Basilica Mass, to Holy Cross parishioners in East Africa during the choir’s recent pilgrimage. Part of the song’s appeal is its lyrical simplicity and repetitive phrases, which allow the singers and listeners alike the opportunity to enter deeply into worship. The music itself is profoundly exuberant, exemplified by the crisp and energized T’s at the end of “excellent” and the powerful swell of the expanding harmonies on “Jesus” as the song builds to its conclusion. Most of all, however, this song allows and calls all of us to engage in what we were created for: the perfect praise of our Lord, Jesus Christ and his holy and excellent name.
