The ESRF has a longstanding research into the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum using several beamlines, mostly from the macromolecular crystallography group but recently scientists have started using other techniques like X-ray phase contrast and X-ray fluorescence nanoprobe on ID16A.
At the end of last year a team published a study on the mechanism of quinoline, an effective compound in antimalarial drugs, in infected red blood cells in near-native conditions. This work, published in PNAS, was led by the Weizmann Institute and the University of Copenhagen. The team used the ESRF, Alba Synchrotron and BESSY.
