Following the April 5 elections in Afghanistan, Senator Casey highlighted the investment and sacrifice that U.S. servicemembers and taxpayers have made to pave the way for the first democratic transition of power in Afghanistan. He welcomed the high turnout in these elections - roughly 60% of eligible voters came to the polls despite Taliban threats. Casey praised the work of the Defense and State Departments, USAID, and NGOs in supporting this Afghan-led process and called for a smooth transition later this year.
