You mentioned that you have a 10 month old baby girl who has been eating solids pretty well, but recently she's been wanting to drink more formula and/or breast milk instead of solid foods. You're wondering if that's normal. And it can be every once in a while, especially if the baby gets a little bit sick, they may start eating less and wanting to drink more. And it's important, when babies are sick, to make sure that they are drinking enough so that they stay well-hydrated. And formula and/or breast milk can offer the baby nutrition that they need during those few days when they're sick, and then hopefully their appetite picks back up and they resume their normal eating habits. But if this a longer trend than just a couple of days and your baby isn't sick, then there's a couple of things you can try.
Sometimes babies just get sick of pureed baby food and they want something with more texture, they want different tastes, they want finger food, and so you can try new things and see if that re-kindles her desire for solids. Another thing you can try, if you haven't already, is just offering her solid foods for meals first instead of giving her liquids first, because, you know, it's just like us - if we drink a whole bunch of water or liquid before we eat, we're fuller, and so you can try switching up the order to see if that makes a difference. Overall, you're shooting for solids at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and for snacks - one in the morning and one in the afternoon, and again, you can switch it up and see if that makes a difference for her.
Now overall, the important thing is that she's happy, healthy, and gaining the appropriate amount of weight as determined by your pediatrician. So if you've noticed an overall loss of appetite, if she's just not acting like she used to, you notice other concerning behaviors, or behaviors that are unusual, talk with your pediatrician. And after asking you more specific questions, and performing an exam, looking at her overall growth, they'll decide if further investigation or intervention is necessary.
