There are right and wrong ways to trim or prune palm trees, over trimming known as pencil topping to make ca canary island palm look like a pineapple may be pleasing to the eye but it is detrimental to the health of the palm. Over pruning a palm tree causes nutritional deficiencies in palms because palm trees take the nutrients from lower leave known fronds and distribute it to the new growth up top so this is why lower leaves get yellow. by allowing lower leaves to grow and only remove the lower leaves when they die you will allow the palm to extract its own nutrients and thrive.
