Sindhudurg Fort - सिंधुदुर्ग किल्ला
Sindhudurg district, Maharashtra
Built 1664
Built by Hirojee Indalkar (Chief Architect)
Built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Sindhudurg fort lies on the shore of Malvan town of Sindhudurg District in the Konkan region of Maharashtra, 450 kilometers (280 mi) south of Mumbai. This imposing construction is spread over an area of 48 acres, with its massive walls standing tall against the crashing waves of the sea. Since the fort is situated on an island, the only way to reach it is by the means of ferries which are quite easily available from the Malvan coast. The ferry takes INR 70 for a round trip and 15 minuted to reach this attraction.
The Sindhudurg Fort is a tangible example of the Maratha foresight and resourcefulness. The construction of Sindhudurg Fort utilizes the natural protection of the surrounding rocks to their advantage. With its solid walls and conspicuous gateways, this fort is a fascinating piece of history which makes it a favourite tourist spot. The walls of the Sindhudurg Fort stand 30 feet high and 12 feet thick, making it practically impossible scale. The main entrance is impossible to detect from the outside, which was further a deterrent to any invaders. One of the most peculiar yet intriguing details of SIndhhudurg Fort is its zig-zag walls, which house a number of pillars and bastions.
There are 42 turrets and ramparts which rise up to a massive 35-40 feet. There are Shivaji Maharaj's Palm & footprints on dried lime slabs in a tower. Big size stones along with 2000 khandis (72, 576 kg) of iron metal were used for the construction of foundations, fortification walls, and bastions. The foundation walls of the Sindhudurg fort were built with 5 khandis (181.5 kg) of molten lead.
