Namaqualand and Zululand is the second film in The South African Scene, A Series by Films Of The Nations, Inc. that highlights the people and countryside of the two regions in South Africa. The film opens with a man and a woman (who appear to be two tourists from Cape Town) on a farm in Namaqualand; they look out at a waterfall. Flowers spring up from the ground in Namaqualand (01:41) during the spring. The Cape Town couple sit in a field of flowers; a close up shot shows the Golden South African Daisy (02:35) and other wild flowers (03:24). On the other side of South Africa is Zululand. The two travelers drive on a rural highway. They stop to look at a waterfall (04:40) and the Valley of A Thousand Hills. Two Zulu men walk on the grass hill (05:13); Zulu women wash clothes. Zulus in tribal dress pose for the camera (05:49). A traveler looks at crafts made by a Zulu woman (06:40). Two travelers hike up a mountain in Zululand (07:20). At Zululand’s Hluhluwe Game Reserve, visitors catch a glimpse of the famous Black Rhinoceros (08:46) as well as the rare White Rhinoceros (09:14). The film concludes with a Zulu man leading ox pulling a wagon (09:52).
Namaqualand (Afrikaans: Namakwaland) is an arid region of Namibia and South Africa, extending along the west coast over 1,000 kilometres (600 mi) and covering a total area of 440,000 square kilometres (170,000 sq mi). It is divided by the lower course of the Orange River into two portions – Little Namaqualand to the south and Great Namaqualand to the north.
Little Namaqualand is within the Namakwa District Municipality, forming part of Northern Cape Province, South Africa. It is geographically the largest district in the country, spanning over 26,836 km².[1] A typical municipality is Kamiesberg Local Municipality. The semi-desert Succulent Karoo region experiences hot summers, sparse rainfall and cold winters.[1]
Great Namaqualand is in the Karas Region of Namibia. Great Namaqualand is sparsely populated by the Namaqua, a Khoikhoi people who traditionally inhabited the Namaqualand region.
