Gosainkunda is a beautiful lake that is situated in Province 3, Bagmati Zone, inside the Langtang National Park of Rasuwa District. This lake is located at an elevation of 4,380 m (14,370 ft) with a surface of 13.8 ha (34 acres). This lake melts to form the Trishuli River. It remains frozen for up to 6 months a year. During the "Janai Purnima" in the month of Shrawan, thousands of pilgrims from Nepal and India come to visit Gosainkunda for worshipping. Gosainkunda is called "Shilu" in Newari Language (Nepal Bhasa).
The Hindu scriptures, Bhagavata Purana, Vishnu Purana, and the epics Ramayana and Mahabharata refer to Samundra Manthan, which is directly related to the origin of Gosainkunda. It is believed that Gosainkunda came into existence when Lord Shiva thrust his holy Trident (Trishul) into the mountain to extract water in order to cool his stinging throat after he had swallowed poison. So, it is believed that once you take bath in the holy lake, all of your pains, sorrows, and sins are washed off.
Gosainkunda is not only famous in terms of religious places but it is also popular as one of the best destinations for trekking. Internal as well as foreign tourists enjoy so much during the trekking there. It takes 6 to 7 days to reach Gosainkunda from Kathmandu. The route follows: Kathmandu to Sundarijal - Mulpaani - Chisapaani - Tuksang - Ghopte - Gosainkunda. After visiting the place and enjoying the scenery of Gosainkunda, you can come back through the same route or for another route, while returning you will walk from Gosainkunda to Dhunche for 6-7 hours, then you'll get on the bus and travel back to Kathmandu and arrive in 6-7 hours.
