Lisa and Douglas Goldman Fund Lecture
Watch two icons of American food history, culture and writing for a rare and intimate conversation on memoir writing, culinary culture and what it’s like to leave indelible marks on our culinary landscape. Alice Waters, legendary Chez Panisse restaurateur and Slow Food and Edible Schoolyard icon, and Ruth Reichl, one of our greatest living food writers, discuss Waters’ new memoir, Coming to My Senses: The Making of a Counterculture Cook, which traces the circuitous road and tumultuous times leading to the opening of Chez Panisse, arguably America’s most influential restaurant.
Alice Waters is a chef, author, food activist, and the founder and owner of Chez Panisse Restaurant in Berkeley, California. She has promoted local sustainable agriculture for over four decades, and in 1995 she founded the Edible Schoolyard Project, which promotes free school lunches and sustainable food curriculum in public schools. She is a leader in the slow food movement and was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Obama in 2015. She is the author of many books including The Art of Simple Food I & II and The Edible Schoolyard: A Universal Idea. Her memoir is entitled Coming to My Senses.
Ruth Reichl began writing about food when she published Mmmmmmm: A Feastiary in 1972. The next year, she moved to Berkeley, California, and became co-owner and cook at The Swallow Restaurant. She was a restaurant critic for New West and California magazines, went on to be the restaurant critic and food editor of the Los Angeles Times, and then served as restaurant critic for the New York Times. In 1999, she joined Gourmet magazine, where she was Editor in Chief for ten years. She has authored four memoirs, Tender at the Bone, Comfort Me with Apples, Garlic and Sapphires and For You, Mom, Finally. She has also written a novel, Delicious!, and a cookbook, My Kitchen Year, 136 Recipes that Saved My Life. She edited the Modern Library Food Series, which currently includes ten books, and was Executive Producer and host of the public television series Adventures with Ruth. She is currently working on a memoir of her Gourmet years and another novel.
